WABORI ART PANEL 〈Hannya〉
A powerful expression of emotion and protection carved in metal.
WABORI ART PANEL 〈Hannya〉 is an artisan-crafted wall panel from Takaoka, Japan, handcrafted by the artist using traditional Japanese metal engraving techniques. Drawing from motifs long seen in temples, ritual objects, and classical performing arts, this panel brings the intense presence of the Hannya figure into contemporary space.
The Hannya is a symbolic figure rooted in Japanese Noh theatre, representing deep human emotions such as jealousy, sorrow, and transformation. Beyond its fearsome expression, the Hannya has also been regarded as a protective symbol, believed to ward off evil spirits and reveal inner truth. Its dual nature reflects both vulnerability and strength, making it one of the most compelling motifs in Japanese visual culture.
Each panel is engraved by hand with chisels, creating sharp lines and layered depth that give the face its dramatic intensity. The metal surface is then finished through oxidation and lacquer processes, producing deep black tones and subtle highlights that emphasize contrast and texture. Designed to hang directly on the wall without glass or framing, the panel allows viewers to experience the material presence and engraved detail up close.
Whether displayed as a focal point in an interior or appreciated as a work of metal art, the Hannya panel stands as a striking balance between tradition, emotion, and contemporary form.
